A new Wellington service is promising to shave up to a quarter off small to medium companies? communications costs.
OnNetworks will be launched in the capital next month by Knossos Networks.
Knossos was started 12 years ago by Victoria University?s former network manager and one of New Zealand?s internet industry pioneers Don Stokes and network services specialist John Rumsey.
The creation of OnNetworks was inspired by seeing smaller Christchurch firms unable to do business when they couldn?t access their offices after the earthquakes.
Targeting companies with five to 20 employees, OnNetworks will offer fully integrated internet connectivity, email, telephone services, website hosting, data storage and remote access ? everything businesses need to communicate with their customers ? at a lower rate than the large telcos currently provide.
In developing OnNetworks, managing director Mat Watkins spent time analysing the telecommunications usage and bills of small to medium businesses in Wellington and Christchurch.
?Around just basic functionality there are a lot of people getting really bad service, being charged an awful lot of money for a simple thing,? Watkins said.
?The Telecoms and Telstra Clears all fight over the top guys and there is a bunch of good system integrators for medium to large businesses but there is not really a conclusive offering for small to medium businesses, so we?re going to Wellington to do it first.?
The OnNetworks products are OnPhone for telephones in desktop handsets or PC-linked headsets, OnHost for hosting and OnNet for internet connectivity. All are integrated so changes made to data on someone?s smartphone will be updated at their desktop computer simultaneously.
?There are other offerings in the market that do that, but they?re expensive and really in the realm of medium to large companies with an IT manager who knows how to make all that work and roll it out. Whereas if you?ve got two or three people working for your company, who has got the time??
When earthquakes rattled Christchurch, where Knossos is based, Watkins noticed many SMEs were brought to a standstill when stranded staff had to work from home but couldn?t access data.
The integrated OnNetworks system is designed to be easy to operate even for people who were not tech ?boffins?, Watkins said. All customers do is plug their equipment into the box provided.
