Sabrina Bryan: I'm not shocked to leave 'DWTS'

By Michael Maloney, TODAY contributor

Adam Taylor / ABC

Sabrina Bryan and Louis Van Amstel.

It was d?j? vu for Sabrina Bryan on "Dancing With the Stars: All-Stars" Tuesday night. She was handed her walking papers in week six, just as she?d been in season five. Both times, she left the competition on the same date -- Oct. 30.

"This is one of the most amazing experiences I ever could have asked for," a grateful Bryan told reporters after the show with her pro partner and pal Louis Van Amstel by her side. "To have a second chance at something like this has been incredible."

Bryan realized leaving early once again was a possibly, and it wasn?t just her shocking elimination five years ago that brought her to that conclusion.

"It?s an all-star season," she noted. "You can?t be shocked to go home. There are incredible people in this cast. Everybody continues to get better and better every week."

Bryan said that she feared the end was near when she and Van Amstel were left on stage along with other top-scoring duo, Apolo Anton Ohno and Karina Smirnoff.

The former Cheetah Girl was asked if she was glad to be leaving on such a high note. "Um, glad?" Ryan responded. "No. But we feel like we accomplished something. Louis brought so much out of me. He?s all I could ever ask of anyone in any kind of partnership. I feel amazing."

One of the goals Bryan accomplished this season was achieving more vulnerability. Just prior to her dance on Monday, she revealed on air that she?d had a relationship that ended badly in part due to her former beau?s addiction.

"This season, I?m in such a happy place," she said. "My life, my family, my friends are all good. My friend from the East Coast (in the path of Superstorm Sandy) is safe. Everything in my life feels good right now.

"Every one of you guys (reporting on the show) asked me what I?d do differently this season after I got the chance to be on it. I said I?d take a moment every day to take in what I have. I realize this time how blessed I am for everything."

Bryan?s professional plans are up in the air. She may return to the "Dancing" show in Las Vegas. Personally, she and Van Amstel plan to take a cruise together in December to the Caribbean.

"Our ?Dancing With the Stars? journey ends, but not our personal journey," Van Amstel said.

"We?re going to be doing lots of dancing," Bryan added.

Visualized GigaPan circa 2006

GigaPan sure has come a long way in a few short years. Sure, it's no Epic Pro, but this old device marked S/N 15 is a pretty cool piece of history for those who love really hi-res images. We spotted it on the shelf of an office here at Carnegie Mellon, clutching on to an old PowerShot point-and-shoot. According to its owner, the tangled device dates back to around 2006. We knew it looked familiar....

?The Leader? Is a Provocative Program of One-Act Plays by Eugene ...

Bare Theatre of Raleigh will present "The Leader," a program of one-act plays about politics by Eugene Ionesco and others, on Oct. 25-28 at Common Ground Theatre in Durham and on Nov. 3, 4, and 8-11 at the Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh

Bare Theatre of Raleigh will present ?The Leader,? a program of one-act plays about politics by Eugene Ionesco and others, on Oct. 25-28 at Common Ground Theatre in Durham and on Nov. 3, 4, and 8-11 at the Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh

Just in time for the nationwide General Election on Nov. 6th, Bare Theatre of Raleigh, NC is presenting The Leader, a program of one-act plays about politics, including ?The Leader? by Romanian and French playwright provocateur Eugene Ionesco (1909-94), on Oct. 25-28 at Common Ground Theatre in Durham and on Nov. 3, 4, and 8-11 at the Visual Art Exchange in Raleigh.

According to Bare Theatre:

?With one of the most decisive elections in United States history approaching, Bare Theatre uses Eugene Ionesco?s 1953 absurdist comedy ?The Leader? as the centerpiece of a collection of pieces to capture the sometimes humorous, sometimes disturbing implications of following a leader. This bizarre story raises questions about human nature and leadership without being specific to time, place, or person.

?[The Leader] will feature, in addition to the Ionesco play and other vignettes: clowns performing [Transportation Security Administration]-style security checkpoints, a brief look at the most impactful leaders in world history, a presentation on ?The Anatomy of a Leader,? fun with lemmings, and a choreographed game of ?king of the hill? with sinister turns.?

?I saw a production about 17 years ago that gave me the idea for this show,? reveals Bare Theatre managing director G. Todd Buker. ?The Eugene Ionesco play, ?The Leader,? is very short; but the students who put it on created a series of original vignettes to go along with it and fill out a full evening.

Buker, who will serve as director for this program of short plays, adds, ?There?s a lot to love about this show. I?m a big fan of Absurdism and Ionesco, but this was also a great opportunity for Bare Theatre to explore clowning and devising.

?Clowning in particular is a favorite,? Buker explains, ?because it breaks many standard rules of theater and the possibilities are endless. We did several workshops in the streets of downtown Raleigh, which I think was a fantastic experience for the cast. They had to approach strangers, and act ridiculous in the streets, which is exhilarating.?

Todd Buker adds, ?Our show is a collection of short works, all of which deal with a leader or lack thereof, or concentrate on followers of various types. We begin with Ionesco?s play, which is very relevant today even though it was written in 1953. That play then becomes the springboard for all of the other short plays and scenes we present.

?There is a short play about the myth of lemmings? mass suicide, another about a cult layoff, even a play written in rhyming couplets about medieval monarchs who sound very much like two well-known political parties,? says Buker.

He says, ?When we originally began the process, I had whiteboard full of ideas that the ensemble had come up with. We also had several short plays from Chuck Keith, who shares writing credit on the project. The most difficult part for me was deciding what to keep and what to let go, and conveying an overall vision to the cast when we were creating it together on the fly.

The Bare Theatre cast for The Leader includes (in alphabetical order) Loren Armitage, Jeff Buckner, Patrick Cox, Matt Fields, Matthew Hager, Joanna Herath, Diana McQueen, Stephen Wall, and Cassandra Wladyslava.

?The cast is the creative team,? claims The Leader?s director Todd Buker, ?and I suspect they may say that devising and some of the clown exercises were the most difficult. Two exercises in particular ? one in which they had to ask insane questions to strangers on the street (with no costume or makeup on to indicate they were performing), and another in which they had to enter a room and try to stand in a box using some basic rules of clowning. That sounds easy, I know, but it?s actually one of the most difficult exercises, because the clown repeatedly has to start over.?

In addition to director Todd Buker, who doubles as lighting and sound designer for The Leader, the Bare Theatre creative team for the show includes physical/fight choreographer Heather J. Strickland, assisted by Jason Bailey; costume designers Susan Buker and Mollie Earls; and stage manager Emily Huffman. (Strickland is the artistic director of Bare Theatre.)

In keeping with the Raleigh-based theater company?s name and reputation for no-frills productions, Todd Buker says, the set for The Leader is a ?Bare stage, only a walk-through metal detector, a platform, a projector screen, and a coat rack.

He adds, ?Each scene is lit according to the needs of the script and the mood. A strobe light is used during the final scene.?

Buker says, ?The cast uses base costumes of a white tank top and black pants, with other pieces such as shirts, coats, tabards, and dresses being used for various scenes. The most unusual costumes are for a short play in which the actors play sperm cells.?

The Leader director Todd Buker says, ?While this show does coincide with the 2012 election, it is not political in any way, and does not directly address the current candidates. This collection is intended as thought-provoking entertainment that will hopefully give the audience lots of laughs.?

He adds, ?The show is suitable for most ages, except for possibly very young children. There is a little bit of adult language, and some adult themes. It is also worth noting that the show contains a few loud gunshots onstage, and a strobe light is used. Onstage violence is mostly stylized and not graphic in nature.?

Bare Theatre presents THE LEADER at 8 p.m. Oct. 25-27 and 2 p.m. Oct. 28 at Common Ground Theatre, 4815B Hillsborough Rd., Durham, North Carolina 27705; and at 8 p.m. Nov. 3, 2 p.m. Nov. 4, 8 p.m. Nov. 8-10, and 2 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Visual Art Exchange, 309 W. It was also a rough week for once-stalwart organizations like Google (whose stock nosedived after missing earnings), the New York Yankees (swept out of the playoffs by the Tigers), and the Boy Scouts of America (as 35 years of "perversion files" went public). On the other hand, Justin Timberlake is shilling a MySpace relaunch, so maybe there's hope for horses and bayonets after all.

Politically Connected Energy Company Wins Offshore Wind Lease

A politically connected renewable energy company has received the go-ahead from the Interior Department to produce wind energy off the coast of Delaware, despite doubts that the project in question will actually materialize.

Interior?s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management announced Tuesday that it had reached an agreement with NRG Bluewater Wind, a project of NRG Energy, to lease 96,430 acres off the coast of Delaware for commercial wind energy production.

But it?s not clear that NRG will be able to secure the financing needed to actually produce energy in that area. The company was forced to cancel a power purchase agreement with Delmarva Power in December after it failed to find financing for the Bluewater project.

While NRG attributed that setback to uncertainty over federal support for wind energy, Matthew Kaplan, associate director at IHS Emerging Energy Research, noted that it illustrated ?the difficulty of persuading utilities to buy offshore wind power in quantities and at rates that make sense to both buyers and sellers.?

The 200 MW of power Delmarva agreed to purchase from NRG Bluewater ?was less than NRG wanted to sell and at a rate that was a lot more expensive than the utility would have to pay from other sources,? Kaplan noted, citing other market researchers.

The Bluewater project will not move forward until NRG can find financiers. Company spokesman David Gaier said the lease would help woo investors, but would not confirm that the Delaware wind farm will actually be built.

While the Bluewater project is riddled with uncertainties, NRG Energy is a frequent beneficiary of federal backing ? it received three loan guarantees worth a combined $3.8 billion through the same program that helped finance bankrupt solar company Solyndra ? and it enjoys a few notable political connections.

The day before BOEM announced its Bluewater lease agreement, NRG executive Jason Few announced he would leave the company for unspecified reasons. Few?s wife is a major campaign bundler for President Obama. Few and NRG chief executive David Crane met with White House official Valerie Jarrett in the West Wing in December 2010, White House visitor logs show.

NRG also enjoys the influence of Kathleen McGinty, who sits on the company?s board of directors. Scribe has noted McGinty?s impressive political resume before:

The former chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality and the founding director of the White House Office on Environmental Policy, McGinty is a ?prot?g? of Al Gore,? according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

White House visitor logs show that McGinty, who also served as a senior advisor to the DNC, met with Nancy Sutley, chair of the White House Counsel on Environmental Quality, in 2010 to discuss the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).

Dr. Karl Hausker, McGinty?s husband, is a former deputy assistant administrator at the Environmental Protection Agency. He also represented the EPA on the White House Climate Change Task Force.

Big Show def. Randy Orton (PHOTOS | WATCH)

Based on their respective interviews before the contest, there was no love lost between The World?s Largest Athlete and WWE?s Apex Predator. The bitter rivalry intensified on SmackDown two weeks prior, when Big Show defeated Orton in a World Heavyweight Title No. 1 Contender?s Match. The World?s Largest Athlete took advantage of an attack by Alberto Del Rio before that match, injuring The Viper?s ribs. On WWE Main Event, though, Orton struck with a fast-paced offense to keep Big Show reeling. The rib injury soon came into play, however, with a powerful blow from the giant stopping Orton?s momentum.

Big Show?s strategy was effective in keeping The Viper on defense throughout the contest. Orton?s injured ribs seemed to be easy targets for the massive fists of The World?s Largest Athlete, and though WWE?s Apex Predator managed to execute an impressive DDT from the third rope, his gigantic opponent was able to roll out of the ring following an RKO.

Relentless, Orton attempted a second RKO at ringside, but Big Show resisted, tossing Orton into the side of the ring with his ribs absorbing the impact. Reeling in pain, Orton?s ribs became the target of a series of huge elbow drops and two Colossal Clutches before Big Show secured the victory with a chokeslam.

What's Your Rating of Hotel Transylvania?

??????????????? Hotel Transylvania is a PG-rated, 91-minute animated comedy derived from famous fairy tale characters. Dracula (voiced by Adam Sandler) is a misunderstanding vampire who builds a large hotel to protect his daughter Mavis (voiced by Selena Gomez). On her 118th birthday, their friends come to celebrate, as well as an unwelcome human that takes a liking to Mavis. The troubles of Dracula keeping this human secret go beyond the party itself, hitting inside his fatherly heart as he has trouble letting his daughter grow up. Andy Samberg, Kevin James, and Fran Drescher also bring life to this incredible animation feat directed by Genndy Tartakovsky.

??????????????? This movie hits home for me as I feel I can connect with Mavis. Mavis represents teenagers willing and able to grow up but pushed down by family or society.? I feel as if Mavis was almost an exact copy of me and how I feel at this stage of my life. I want to be able to grow and excel in life, but I feel pushed down by many people. There were, however, many funny parts that gave light to the movie and to me.

??????????????? I find it hard to find a good movie today that seems to explain the problems that we feel in our lives. Most movies some people go to nowadays, go just to have a good time and be with friends. I think we should go to get a lesson out of it. Yes, some movies are really only for entertainment and for our action-fix. But for those movies that are actually meant to teach something, learn from them. Watch and think between the lines of the story. You might actually find some answers to some life questions.

Oldest arthropod brain found in buglike creature

The oldest brain ever found in an arthropod ? a group of invertebrates that includes insects and crustaceans ? is surprisingly complex for its 520-million-year age, researchers report Wednesday.

The fossilized brain, found in an extinct arthropod from China, looks very similar to the brains of today's modern insects, said study researcher Nicholas Strausfeld, the director of the Center for Insect Science at the University of Arizona.

"The rest of the animal is incredibly simple, so it's a big surprise to see a brain that is so advanced, as it were, in such a simple animal," Strausfeld told LiveScience.

The discovery suggests that brains evolved a complex organization early on in history, he added.

The evolving insect brain
Arthropods include any animal with an exoskeleton, jointed legs and a segmented body, from lobsters to scorpions to beetles to butterflies. There is controversy about how these various creatures evolved, however. One theory holds that insects evolved from ancestors not unlike today's branchiopods, which are extremely simple crustaceans such as fairy shrimp and water fleas. Branchiopods have simpler brains than insects and higher crustaceans, Strausfeld said, so this theory of evolution holds that both higher crustaceans and insects evolved very similar complex brains after splitting off from this common branchiopod-like ancestor. [Dazzling Photos of Dew-Covered Insects]

Alternatively, all of these groups ? insects, branchiopods and higher crustaceans ? could have evolved from an ancestor with a complex brain, with branchiopods regressing later.

"So the question was, 'What was the early brain, what did it look like? Did it look simple or did it look complex?'" Strausfeld said.

That's not an easy question to answer, given that brains rarely get fossilized. But Strausfeld's earlier work on arthropod fossils convinced him it could be done. He just had to go to China, home of an amazing collection of stunningly preserved ancient fossils.

Last-minute discovery
In China's Yunnan province, paleontologists have long uncovered fossils from the Cambrian period, which ran from about 542 million to 488 million years ago. These fossils are very well-preserved.

For five days, Strausfeld and his colleagues poured through fossils, searching for dark silhouettes of preserved brains inside ancient arthropod heads. There was one fossil that remained elusive, however: A specimen Strausfeld had read about in a paper by Swedish researchers. They thought they'd seen a fossilized brain.

With only a few hours left in the lab, Strausfeld's colleague, Xiaoya Ma, of the Natural History Museum in London went hunting for the missing specimen. An hour and a half later, she returned with the fossil, an extinct armored creature just a few centimeters long called Fuxianhuia protensa. [25 Amazing Ancient Beasts]

"I looked at the microscope and I think I said something like, 'Whoopee, I think we've got the crown jewels!'" Strausfeld said. Under magnification, he could see the dark brown silhouette of preserved brain nestled in the arthropod's skull.

"It's pretty bloody marvelous, actually. ? I was sitting looking at the thing, going, 'Oh my goodness gracious,'" Strausfeld said. With only five hours left before he had to leave to give a scheduled talk and fly home, Strausfeld got busy photographing the discovery.

An analysis of the brain revealed it to be in three parts, just as the brains of modern insects are in three parts (known as the protocerebrum, deutocerebrum and tritocerebrum). Nerves from the eyes extend into the protocerebrum, nerves from the antennaes feed into the ancient creature's deutocerebrum, and a third nerve root from further back in the body extends into the tritocerebrum. The researchers report the findings in this week's issue of the journal Nature.

This complex, insectlike brain suggests that rather than insects arising from simple branchiopods, today's arthropods descend from a complex-brained ancestor. Branchiopods would later have shed some of this complexity, Strausfeld said, while other crustaceans and insects kept it. In fact, he said, the brain may have evolved to segment into three parts very early on; mammals, including humans, have a forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain, suggesting a common organization.

"Lots of people don't like that idea, sharing a brain with a beetle, but there's good evidence suggesting that you do," Strausfeld said.

Bug brains may seem simple to us, but arthropods are at the base of many a food chain, making them crucial creatures, Strausfeld said. He and his team plan to return to China to hunt out more ancient arthropod brains.

"What we want to do, of course, is go deeper in time," Strausfeld said.

Rumor: AT&T will start taking pre-orders for Windows Phone 8 devices on October 21st

Rumor: AT&T will start taking pre-orders for Windows Phone 8 devices on October 21st

Color us not-too-shocked if it's true, but the Verge has reported that AT&T will begin taking orders for Windows Phone 8 models from the likes of Nokia and HTC on October 21st. Microsoft has already sent invites around for a formal launch of the new smartphone OS for October 29th in San Francisco, so it would make sense for AT&T to start building its own list a week or so ahead of that. The company will also (supposedly) start taking your money for its US-exclusive Samsung Ativ Smart PC and Asus Vivo Tab RT on that day, which also jibes well with Redmond's Windows 8 launch event on October 25th. Availability of those devices is rumored to be the day after (October 26th), while eager Windows Phone 8 users will get their hands on those models "in early November," according to the source. We've reached out to Microsoft for confirmation, though it would be more surprising if all the order-taking didn't commence around those dates.
