New study: Breast cancer is 'over diagnosed' | MNN - Mother Nature ...
Since 1991, breast cancer deaths have decreased by around 25 percent. ?Many in the field have credited mammograms and early detection with contributing to this reduction, but a new study suggests that mammograms are actually "over-diagnosing" breast cancer and leading to months of unnecessary treatment for women for cancers which would have never caused harm.

The study, which was published in the Medical Journal of Australia, was conducted by breast cancer researchers Robin Bell and Robert Burton. ?The two scientists found that?for every 2000 women who underwent breast cancer screening via Australia's publicly-funded BreastScreen program over a 10 year period, one would have her life prolonged but 10 healthy women would be diagnosed as breast cancer patients and treated unnecessarily. ?They?argued that a sizable percentage of certain cancers are "over-diagnosed."?
The problem as it stands is that doctors cannot always foresee the course of each individual tumor. ?So the current protocol has followed a "treat it just in case" path which may save a life - but more often than not just leads to unnecessary treatment. ?The new study's authors suggested that slow-growing tumors should be renamed "IDLE tumors," and left untreated. ?They estimated 25 percent of breast cancers detected with mammograms and about 60 percent of prostate cancers are "over-diagnosed."

As you can imagine, this study has produced a firestorm of opposition within the health care community. ?Australia's public health adviser David Roder and Cancer Council Australia CEO Ian Olver wrote an "opposing view" editorial in the same issue of the Medical Journal of Australia arguing that the reduction in breast cancer mortality in Australia reflects both treatment and screening effects.?

"There is no consensus on levels of overdiagnosis, with estimates worldwide varying from close to zero to over 30% of diagnosed cancers, irrespective of whether in-situ lesions were included. The estimates vary so widely that interpretation is difficult. Research is needed to better define levels of overdiagnosis and, ideally, to develop more effective means of determining at diagnosis the potential for screen-detected and other breast cancers to progress."

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -
Eight people are left homeless after a house fire on 46th Street and Avenue T on Thursday.
Around 1:30p.m. fire fighters rushed to the home where huge plumes of smoke were billowing out of the garage.
Investigators say four people were sleeping inside the home when the fire started, and there were no working smoke detectors. "They're lucky to be alive," said Elliot Eldredge, assistant fire marshal.
Eldredge says smoke woke up one of the residents who was then able to alert the rest of the people inside. The four made it out safely but their 17 pets were still inside.
Fire fighters rushed inside and pulled out 13 puppies and three dogs. They gave oxygen to the adult dogs, but the puppies' mother later died. The pet cat was not found.
"My family is alive and that's all that matters. They didn't get hurt, and they were able to save most of the animals. That's what's important," cried Misty Corwin-Fish, the sister of the home owner. "My mom was inside. My brother was inside. They were asleep?I don't know what would have happened if 911 wasn't called."
Fire investigators say this was an electrical fire, possibly caused by a space heater in the garage. ?While there is extensive smoke damage, Eldredge says the home is not a complete loss and can be repaired.
The Red Cross has been called in to assist. ?They will put the eight residents in a hotel for about three days and give them clothes to stay warm.
The dogs were initially taken by a neighbor, but now the Humane Society of West Texas has stepped in to take the puppies and feed them. The puppies are only 1-2 weeks old. The Humane Society is looking for volunteers to help out.

Wis. man arrested for playing too much cowbell
OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) ? Demonstrators calling for the recall of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker learned there really is such a thing as too much cowbell.
Oshkosh police arrested a 26-year-old Appleton man on Thursday after he kept playing a cowbell and shaking it in an officer's face when he and other protesters were told to be quiet.
The Oshkosh Northwestern reports (http://oshko.sh/zKwPVV ) that when the officer tried to take the cowbell, the man pushed the officer. A 25-year-old Appleton woman then hit the officer in the back with her picket sign while the man was being handcuffed.
Both were taken to the Winnebago County Jail. Police will recommend that the man be charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and the woman be charged with disorderly conduct and battery to an officer.

Wall Street ekes out gains for fourth day (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The S&P 500 closed at a five-month high for the third day on Thursday but had difficulty extending gains in the face of lackluster economic data and another European bond market test.
Energy shares curbed gains after Chevron Corp (CVX.N), the second-largest U.S. oil company, said fourth-quarter profit would be far below the previous quarter. Chevron slid 2.6 percent to $104.97, making it the biggest drag on the Dow, while the S&P energy index (.GSPE) fell 0.9 percent and was the biggest decliner among S&P sectors.
In its fourth day of gains, the S&P 500 has risen 1.4 percent, but it's added only 0.3 percent since Tuesday as investors look for more convincing evidence of an improving U.S. economy, solid corporate earnings and progress toward resolving the euro zone's debt crisis.
Analysts also pointed to technical resistance near the 1,300 level.
"We may be stuck in neutral because you have two very strong forces opposing one another. You have fundamentals that are not particularly fantastic at the present moment, with a market that wants to project out a year or so and do a little bit better," said Doreen Mogavero, CEO of Mogavero, Lee & Co. in New York.
"The divergence of opinions on where this market is going is balancing us out and we are sort of stuck."
The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) gained 21.57 points, or 0.17 percent, to 12,471.02. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) added 3.02 points, or 0.23 percent, to 1,295.50. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) rose 13.94 points, or 0.51 percent, to 2,724.70.
Investors will look to earnings from JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N), the first of the major U.S. banks to report earnings, on Friday for signs the banking sector's recent gains are justified. The KBW Bank Index (.BKX) is up nearly 11 percent for the year.
"You need three groups to really push this market through - you need the financials, you need technology and you need energy," said Paul Mendelsohn, chief investment strategist at Windham Financial Services in Charlotte, Vermont.
"They are not really going to go heavily into the financials until we get JPMorgan out of the way tomorrow morning, then we will get Goldman Sachs after that, and we will get a feel for whether the earnings are enough to push us through."
On the euro-zone front, Spanish and Italian government bond yields fell as solid auctions for government debt in the two countries were an encouraging sign for investors, who will brace for another Italian bond sale on Friday.
But U.S. retail sales rose at the weakest pace in seven months in December and first-time claims for jobless benefits moved higher last week, denting optimism about the U.S. recovery after a string of upbeat economic data.
Among individual stocks, shares of Multi-Fineline Electronix Inc (MFLX.O) surged 18 percent to $25.40 after preliminary quarterly net sales for the maker of circuit boards for electronics came in better than expected.
Wynn Resorts Ltd (WYNN.O) slipped 1.9 percent to $109.80 after Vice Chairman Kazuo Okada, who is also a major shareholder, sued the casino operator, claiming it was blocking his attempts to review business accounts despite repeated requests.
Volume was modest, with about 6.66 billion shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE Amex and Nasdaq, slightly below the daily average of 6.7 billion.
Advancing stocks outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by 1,820 to 1,147, while on the Nasdaq, advancers beat decliners 1,524 to 957.

Van der Sloot gets 28 years in murder case

A Peruvian court on Friday sentenced Joran?van?der?Sloot?to 28 years in prison for murder of a young woman he met at a Lima casino, even as the family of U.S. teenager Natalee Holloway sought to have him prosecuted in the U.S. over her disappearance in 2005.

The court also ordered him to pay $75,000 in reparations to the family of the 21-year-old victim. He said he reserves the right to appeal the conviction and sentence, the first ever imposed on him despite prosecutors' repeated efforts to prove he was involved in Holloway's apparent death on the Dutch Caribbean island of Aruba.
Under Peru's penal system,?Van?der?Sloot?could become eligible for parole after serving half of the sentence with good behavior, including work and study.
The prosecution had sought a 30-year sentence for first-degree murder and theft.
Van?der?Sloot's?lawyer argued that client killed the 21-year-old Flores in May 2010 during a fit of rage he blamed on psychological trauma from being hounded as the prime suspect in Holloway case.
The victim's father, Ricardo Flores, complained after the verdict that?Van?der?Sloot?was enjoying favorable conditions in a Lima prison, where he has been living apart from the general population and foreigners with money can buy superior treatment.
"A jail isn't a 5-star hotel," Ricardo Flores told reporters. "Let's hope the authorities take that into account and not just in our case."
"Since the first day we've been complaining about the excessive privileges" that?Van?der?Sloot?allegedly enjoyed in jail.
He said he would present evidence of this at a news conference on Monday.

The Holloway case remains open and a judge on Thursday declared her dead her parents want?Van?der?Slootto eventually be extradited to the U.S. and tried on related charges. He has been indicted in extortion charges there for allegedly offering to lead a lawyer for Holloway's mother to her daughter's remains.
Van?der?Sloot?long ago confessed the Flores killing, telling police he became enraged after the business student discovered his connection to the Holloway disappearance on his laptop while they played poker online. Police forensic experts disputed that version, and the victim's family said?Van?der?Sloot?killed Flores in order to rob her.
The prosecution maintained?Van?der?Sloot?killed Flores with "ferocity" and "cruelty," concealing the crime and fleeing to Chile, where he was caught two days after Flores' decaying body was found.
He took more than $200 in cash plus credit cards from the victim and made his initial getaway in her car, leaving it in a different part of Lima, prosecutors say.
"We've been dealing with her death for the last six and a half years," Dave Holloway said after Thursday's hearing in Birmingham, Alabama. He said the judge's order there on his daughter's death closes one chapter in the ordeal, but added: "We've still got a long way to go to get justice."
Flores slain five years to the day after Holloway, an 18-year-old from the wealthy Birmingham suburb of Mountain Brook, disappeared.
Attorneys said both parents spoke of hopes that?van?der?Sloot's?next stop will be Birmingham, where he faces federal charges accusing him of extorting $25,000 from Beth Holloway to reveal the location of her daughter's body. Prosecutors said the money was paid, but nothing was disclosed about the missing woman's whereabouts.
Authorities said they believe the tall, garrulous Dutchman used the money to travel to Peru on May 14, 2010.
Natalee Holloway disappeared on May 30, 2005, during a high school graduation trip to Aruba, wherevan?der?Sloot?grew up. Her body was never found and repeated searches turned up nothing as intense media coverage brought the case worldwide attention.
Investigators have long worked from the assumption that the young woman was dead in Aruba, where the case was classified as a homicide investigation. That investigation remains open, though there has been no recent activity, said Solicitor General Taco Stein, an official with the prosecutor's office in Aruba.
In Birmingham, Natalee Holloway's parents, who have been divorced since 1993, shook hands and talked briefly before the hearing. During the 10-minute proceeding, they looked on somberly.
