Android Trojan fools users with Google Play icon

A?new form of Android malware can sneak onto your phone, show up as an icon resembling the Android app store?known as Google Play???and send your phone number to criminals, who can then use it to send out text messages or launch a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.

Russian security firm Doctor Web has issued a warning about the Trojan known as Android.DDoS.1.

"It is not quite clear yet how the Trojan spreads, but most probably criminals employ social engineering tricks and disguise the malware as a legitimate application from Google," the security firm said on its site.

Once Android.DDoS.1 is installed on a phone, it creates an application icon that looks like that of Google Play's. "If the user decides to use the fake icon to access Google Play, the original application will be launched, which significantly reduces the risk of any suspicion," Doctor Web says.

The Trojan's activities "can lower performance of the infected handset and affect the well-being of its owner, as access to the Internet and SMS are chargeable services," the security firm says. "Should the device send messages to premium numbers, malicious activities will cost the user even more."

How do you know whether you have this truly bad boy? You could install mobile security software. Doctor Web's software can identify the Trojan, and it's likely that mobile?software from other firms including Lookout,?Kaspersky,?McAfee or Norton, can, or will soon, do the same.

As Kaspersky noted recently on its blog, "Cybercriminals love to offer their infected programs directly through the Google Play applications store ... The first case of this was reported back in March 2011, and since then malware has appeared regularly in this online store. A combination of insufficient analysis of the apps?on Google Play and customers? continuing?confidence in it as a safe source of software, means malware can survive there?for days???sometimes weeks???infecting many devices."

The Federal Trade Commission also recently posted a free?Smartphone Security Checker for users of Android, as well as?Apple's iOS, BlackBerry and Windows phones. This online tool takes consumers through a 10-step security checklist tailored to their smartphone's operating system. Even though it does not place malware protection software on your phone, it's a good place to start.

Sonos is the de facto choice for multi-room audio, but even some of its biggest proponents will grumble about the lack of built-in WiFi -- going wireless in any way has meant tacking a Bridge on to the cost of an already expensive system. An FCC filing for an upcoming device, the Playbar, hints that common sense might have the upper hand. While there's few details of the audio system itself, there's explicit mentions of dual-band 802.11n WiFi inside. Just what that WiFi does is another matter. Sonos prefers using its proprietary network to cut back on lag and interference, so the Playbar's additional wireless may extend functionality rather than simplify our lives. With approval out of the way, there's a better chance we'll know the full story in the near future.

An Appetite for Weight Management Tools - Health.am

WHEN I received the results of a routine cholesterol test this summer, I was certain there had been some kind of mistake. I?m young, unstressed and healthy, or so I imagined. I work out, too, and most impartial observers - and some partial ones - would describe me as lean. Plus, I eat a nutritious diet, I swear. So why did my LDL levels surpass my I.Q. - or, for that matter, Einstein?s?

The facts were stark: My genes predisposed me to metabolic syndrome, my doctor told me. Like my forebears, I was on a fast path to heart disease and diabetes. My doctor ordered me to reduce my carbs and come up with a more stringent exercise plan. I?ve rarely monitored what I eat and how much exercise I get. I had no idea how to go about the logistics of it. How would I count my carbs? How would I track my fitness routine?

Of course, there are apps for that. I set out to scour the market for devices and programs to help me and any family member who wished to join me in my low-carb adventure improve our health. I found two kinds of technologies: fitness trackers to monitor physical activity, and P.C. and smartphone apps to track diet. I spent weeks testing several of them. And while I found a few to be quite helpful, they were all just short of fantastic.

I tried four high-end fitness gadgets: Nike?s FuelBand ($149), the Fitbit One ($99.95), Jawbone?s Up ($129.99) and the BodyMedia FIT wireless armband ($149). I also threw in a plain-Jane pedometer, the Omron HJ-720ITC, which I found for $31 at many stores online.

All of these devices work in a similar way. You attach them to your person (the FuelBand and Up fit around your wrist, the FIT goes around your upper arm, and the Fitbit and Omron pedometer can be placed in a pocket or clipped to your belt). Then, as you move, the devices measure your activity.

Unfortunately each device had major drawbacks. Even though I had gotten the proper size, I found that the Up and the FuelBand did not fit well around my wrist. They tapped against my desk while I typed, and they slid about uncomfortably when I washed the dishes. (They are both water-resistant.) BodyMedia?s FIT, meanwhile, is about the size of a man?s large wristwatch. Positioned directly against the skin around the upper arm, it is ungainly ? I found it distracting when I was in a short-sleeve workout shirt, and strange-looking under a nice button-down shirt.

The pedometer and the Fitbit were easier to handle; I hardly noticed them crammed with my keys and phone in my pocket. On the other hand, because they are not wearable, I often forgot them on my bedside table, where they did no good.

Still, among these vast offerings, I found the Fitbit and the cheap Omron to be best. The Fitbit is an unobtrusive slab of plastic about the size of a U.S.B. thumb drive. Its software ? which is available for Macs and Windows P.C.?s, as well as iOS and Android devices ? is simple to learn and offers plenty of graphs and stats to track your progress. The most useful is a graph of your activity over the course of the day: you can see how many calories you burned while at work and alter your behavior accordingly. Maybe go for a brief walk after lunch?

(I was a big fan of Jawbone?s Up software, too, but I ultimately found it too limited: It works only on Apple?s iOS devices; the company has not yet made versions for P.C.?s or Android devices.)

The best thing about the Fitbit is its wireless syncing capability. It comes with a tiny receiver that plugs into your computer?s U.S.B. port; whenever your Fitbit is near your machine, it sends its data over the air, no physical docking required. It also syncs directly to your phone over Bluetooth. (You do have to plug your Fitbit in to charge it, but only rarely ? you can go more than a week between charges.)

The Omron, by comparison, does not do wireless syncing, and its optional P.C. software is pretty basic. But paucity is its beauty. No setup is required. Just turn it on and leave it in your pocket. At the end of the day, peek at its screen ? in large, readable type, it shows a single stat: how many steps you have walked that day. The Omron does not promise the world, but it delivers enough information to keep you healthy.

While all of these devices made it easy to track my activity, they were of little help in monitoring my diet. The Up, Fitbit and BodyMedia FIT include food-logging options in their companion software, but I found them all to be a little slow. The problem with tracking food is that you eat a lot of it, so you need something that will make quick work of adding the many items you have consumed throughout the day. Ideally, the software would let you add multiple items with a single action, would remember what you eat repeatedly and would be connected to a vast library of foodstuffs ? so that when you told it that you ate, say, a slice of meatloaf from a Cook?s Illustrated recipe, it could instantly calculate your plate?s nutritional information.

I tried a few programs that promised to be so savvy, including FitDay and Lose It! But there was one that ranked far above the rest: My Fitness Pal, a free calorie-counting app that runs on the Web as well as iOS devices, Androids, the BlackBerry and Windows Phone. My Fitness Pal did exactly what I describe above: It let me add many foods at a time, and remembered my most frequent consumables so that I could add them with a single tap every day. I also loved My Fitness Pal?s bar code scanner. Point your smartphone?s camera at the U.P.C. symbol of that peanut butter you are slathering on that piece of bread and the app instantly understands what you are eating.

But My Fitness Pal?s killer feature is its enormous database. The app claims to have knowledge of more than a million food items, from apple strudel to zucchini walnut bread. In my tests, I found it almost creepily comprehensive. It had caloric info on that Cook?s Illustrated meatloaf, as well as a flounder recipe I made from Bon App?tit, and pretty much anything you could ever buy in a grocery and even many restaurants. If it does not have an item, My Fitness Pal allows you to enter your own recipe; for example, you can type in the ingredients of your mom?s apple pie, and it will figure out how many inches a slice will add to your waist.

Combine all these features and you get an app that makes dieting less of a drag. With My Fitness Pal, I am able to log an entire day?s meals in just a minute or two. I do yearn for the time when some kind of sensor will automatically track my intake. But that day is not imminent. For now, tracking your diet with My Fitness Pal is the next best thing to eating any old thing you want.

After Conn. shootings, questions about mental health insurance

In his speech at the memorial service for the Newtown victims, President Barack Obama included mental health in calling for a national response to the massacre, a conversation that so far has focused on gun control. "I will use whatever power this office holds to engage my fellow citizens -- from law enforcement to mental health professionals to parents and educators -- in an effort aimed at preventing more tragedies like this," the president said.

Lat week, White House spokesman Jay Carney pointed to the federal health law as evidence that the administration has already started to tackle the issue. Mental health issues are "clearly a factor that needs to be addressed in some of these cases of horrific violence," Carney said.?"Obamacare, if you will, has ensured that mental health services are a part of the services" provided under the health law.

Insurance coverage for mental health treatment has long been spotty. More than a?quarter of U.S. adults have a diagnosable mental health problem in any given year, but?fewer than half receive treatment. While the Affordable Care Act, along with the Mental Health Parity Act of 2008, goes a long way toward assuring coverage for most Americans, some gaps persist.?There are questions, for example, about just what counts as equivalent treatment under the parity law, and whether it's being fully enforced.?

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about mental health coverage:

Didn't the Mental Health Parity Act already guarantee coverage for Americans with insurance?

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, signed into law in 2008,?made a big dent in the problem of mental health coverage.

Under that law, employers with more than 50 workers that include mental health services in their insurance plans were barred from covering them at a lower level than other medical conditions. That means that the plans could not provide fewer inpatient hospital days or require higher out-of-pocket costs, more cost sharing or separate deductibles for mental health conditions.

An estimated 140 million Americans were expected to benefit from the changes. But Paul N. Samuels, director and president of the Legal Action Center, says that some people still aren't receiving equal coverage, and the law is not always enforced. "That's a problem we're really concerned about," he says.

And while the law guaranteed parity for employees of companies that chose to offer mental health coverage, the law didn't require employers to offer such coverage. Even so, in 2012, 85 percent of employers offered some form of mental health benefits, according to the Society for Human Resource Management.

Mental health coverage under small business and individual market plans was not included in the Parity Act. In short, whether you have mental health coverage in an employer-sponsored insurance plan depends on where you work.

What if I don't have mental health coverage in my employer?s insurance plan? Will the ACA change that?

Employers with 50 or more workers can continue to not offer the benefits. But small group and individual plans?will be required to offer the coverage in 2014 through online exchanges created under the law.

I'm planning to buy an insurance plan through one of the new exchanges. What kind of mental health coverage will I have?

All plans sold in the exchanges will be required to provide coverage for mental health and substance abuse as one of 10 essential benefit categories. That coverage must also comply with the?parity laws already required for large employers. The exchanges will be open to individuals and small businesses.

The same rules will apply to small group and individual plans purchased outside of the exchange.

This means that beginning in 2014, if you, or your small employer, are purchasing any new insurance plan, coverage will include mental health benefits on par with any other medical condition. It?s not clear what exactly will be covered ? for example, group home and residential treatment outside of a hospital.

I'll be covered under the Medicaid expansion authorized by the law. What kind of mental health coverage will I get?

If you earn less than?138 percent of the?federal poverty level (about $32,809 for a family of four), you may be newly eligible for Medicaid coverage in 2014. Like people who purchase coverage through the exchange, new Medicaid beneficiaries will receive mental health benefits on par with other medical or surgical needs.

That coverage is less robust than the current traditional Medicaid coverage offered by states, says Jennifer Mathis, deputy legal director at the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law. That's because most states offer mental health benefits for Medicaid recipients that are more generous than the coverage offered by commercial insurance plans. But the new Medicaid benefits will be modeled on and measured against private insurance purchased by small businesses now.

Mathis says, however, that it will likely be difficult for states to maintain two parallel Medicaid programs, one for current beneficiaries and a second for the newly eligible. She hopes that most will choose to offer all Medicaid recipients the more robust benefits instead.

What else in the ACA may improve mental health treatment?

The ACA has several other provisions that will affect mental health coverage and treatment.

The Prevention and Public Health Fund created by the law, for example, includes $35 million to integrate primary care and mental health care, $10 million to train and recruit mental health professionals, and an additional $53 million in mental health screening, surveillance, and suicide prevention funds.

The ACA?also requires that plans offer depression screening for adults without a copayment, co-insurance or a deductible.

What problems might arise?

While the ACA "provides enormous potential and opportunity to make sure than many millions more Americans obtain the services they need," says Samuels, "that will only happen if the implementation of those reforms is effective." Samuels worries that the rules from HHS will not be clear or strong enough to make the parity laws meaningful. He also worries about getting everyone who is eligible for coverage enrolled, particularly those with severe mental health disorders who be may homeless or living on the fringes of society.

In addition, governors in several Republican states have said that they will not expand Medicaid, leeway they were given by the Supreme Court's health law decision in June. That could leave many Americans without any form of insurance coverage, including mental health benefits.

Access to treatment will likely also remain a serious stumbling block. States have cut $4.35 billion in public mental health spending from 2009? to 2012, a trend that is likely to continue over the next several years, according to the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors. At the same time, the system has seen nearly a 10 percent increase in usage.

As many as 30 million people are expected to gain insurance coverage beginning in 2014. Of those, the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration?estimates that 6 to 10 million will have untreated mental illnesses or addiction, adding additional demands to a system that is already overwhelmed. Patients may experience long wait times to see a psychiatrist, for example, and may require additional investments to expand the mental health workforce.

"I think there will be initial period where you may see folks with mental health coverage waiting longer than they'd like to get care," says Joel Miller, senior director of policy and health care reform at the state mental health program directors group.

Worshippers rejoice in Jesus' Bethlehem birthplace

BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) ? Pilgrims and locals celebrated Christmas Day on Tuesday in the ancient Bethlehem church built over the site where tradition holds Jesus was born, candles illuminating the sacred site and the joyous sound of prayer filling its overflowing halls.

Overcast skies and a cold wind didn't dampen the spirits of worshippers who came dressed in holiday finery and the traditional attire of foreign lands to mark the holy day in this biblical West Bank town. Bells pealed and long lines formed inside the fourth-century Church of the Nativity complex as Christian faithful waited eagerly to see the grotto that is Jesus' traditional birthplace.

Duncan Hardock, 24, a writer from MacLean, Va., traveled to Bethlehem from the republic of Georgia, where he had been teaching English. After passing through the separation barrier Israel built to ward off West Bank attackers, he walked to Bethlehem's Manger Square where the church stands.

"I feel we got to see both sides of Bethlehem in a really short period of time," Hardock said. "On our walk from the wall, we got to see the lonesome, closed side of Bethlehem ... But the moment we got into town, we're suddenly in the middle of the party."

Bethlehem lies 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of Jerusalem. Entry to the city is controlled by Israel, which occupied the West Bank in 1967.

Hardock's girlfriend, 22-year-old Jennifer Gemmell of Longmont, Colorado, compared the festive spirit in Manger Square on Christmas Eve, saying "it's like being at Times Square at New Year's."

The cavernous church was unable to hold all the worshippers who had hoped to celebrate Christmas Day Mass inside. A loudspeaker outside the church broadcast the service to the hundreds in the square who could not pack inside.

Tourists in the square posed for pictures as vendors hawked olive wood rosaries, nativity scenes, corn on the cob, roasted nuts, tea and coffee.

An official from the Palestinian tourism ministry predicted 10,000 foreigners would visit Bethlehem on Christmas Day and said 15,000 visited on Christmas Eve ? up 20 percent from a year earlier. The official, Rula Maia'a, attributed the rise in part to the Church of the Nativity's classification earlier this year as a U.N. World Heritage Site.

Christians from Israel ? Arab citizens and others ? also boosted the number of visitors.

Information technology consultant Martin Wzork came to Bethlehem with his wife and young daughter from Krakow, Poland.

"My wife believes in God, so it's important for her," said Wzork, who described himself as a non-believer. "For me, it's interesting because it's a historical place and famous."

On Christmas Eve, thousands of Christians from all over the world packed the square, which was awash in light, resplendent with decorations and adorned by a lavishly decorated, 17-meter (55-foot) fir tree. Their Palestinian hosts, who welcome this holiday as the high point of their city's year, were especially joyous this season, proud of the United Nations' recognition of an independent state of Palestine just last month.

Israel, backed by the United States, opposed the Palestinian statehood bid, saying it was a ploy to bypass negotiations, something the Palestinians deny. Talks stalled four years ago.

Later Tuesday, the world's Christmas focus will shift to Vatican City, where Pope Benedict XVI will deliver his traditional "Urbi et Orbi" speech ? Latin for "to the city and the world" ? from the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica to thousands of pilgrims, tourists and Romans gathered in the piazza below.

The speech traditionally reviews world events and global challenges, and ends with the pope delivering Christmas greetings in dozens of languages.

DENVER (AP) ? By his own estimation, Peyton Manning is not the quarterback he used to be.

Try telling that to the Cleveland Browns.

Manning threw for a season-high 339 yards and three touchdowns, two of which he zinged into impossibly tight windows to well-covered receivers, that pushed the Denver Broncos into a first-place tie in the AFC standings with a 34-12 win over the Browns.

The 36-year-old quarterback recorded his 72nd career three-touchdown game Sunday as Denver (12-3) won its 10th straight. Manning has 34 touchdowns and 4,355 passing yards this season ? second-most touchdowns he's thrown in his 14 seasons and 203 away from second-most yards, as well.

Yet, when asked if he's playing as well as he did in his prime, Manning didn't hesitate: "I don't. I do not. I don't," he said.

"A 36-year-old quarterback coming off a year and a half off, playing on a new team, I'm trying to be as good as I possibly can in this scenario," he said in an unusually candid news conference. "It's a different kind of body I'm playing in and just a different kind of quarterback play for me."

Yes, Manning says, it takes more time with the trainer, more time in the weight room and there's more mystery because of the injury. But when he hits the field, he looks like the quarterback who has a record four Most Valuable Player awards and is in the running for a fifth.

His first two touchdown passes, to Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, were Exhibits A and B of his prowess on a breezy, warm day the quarterback used to test out an orange glove. He may use it when the weather gets colder come playoff time.

The throw to Thomas was a 22-yarder lobbed to the back of the end zone. The 10-yard touchdown to Decker was more of a laser. Like the Thomas touchdown, it was thrown in leaping range of the receiver where only he could catch it.

"People call that the Dwight Clark throw," Manning said of the iconic Joe Montana-to-Dwight Clark touchdown that won the 1981 NFC title game for San Francisco.

Browns cornerback Sheldon Brown had blanket-tight coverage on both balls. Sometimes the other guy is simply better.

"I've seen him do a lot of special things," said receiver Brandon Stokley, who also played with Manning in Indianapolis. "It would be hard, at this point, for anything he does to surprise me."

Manning's mastery opens things up for the Denver defense to get aggressive, and it did ? finishing with six sacks, all in the second half.

Von Miller was in on two, the second of which knocked quarterback Brandon Weeden out of the game with an injury to his right shoulder. Late in the fourth quarter, Browns running back Trent Richardson was carted off the field, with trainers looking at his left ankle. Coach Pat Shurmur offered no additional information on the injuries.

Cleveland (5-10) lost its second straight after winning three in a row.

"Our record (stinks) and everybody is disappointed," defensive back Joe Haden said. "Every week it seems like you lose a game and you try to explain why it happened, that you just lost. We need to do better. We just need to win. We can't keep coming here talking all the same."

As good as the Broncos were, there were frustrations. Denver finished with a season-high 11 penalties; Manning threw an interception that ended a long second-quarter drive inside the Cleveland 10; Broncos kick returners bobbled the ball twice, but recovered both; Browns lineman Billy Winn plowed guard Zane Beadles into Manning, altering the trajectory of the pass 30 feet into the air for an incompletion. Manning pounded his fist into the turf after that one.

Imperfections like that have helped the Broncos stay remarkably focused on next week ? in this case, a regular-season finale against Kansas City (2-13) ? instead of a playoff road that seemingly looks easier after every win. This week, it was Houston falling at home, 23-6 to Minnesota, dropping the Texans into a tie for the first spot in the AFC. Houston holds the tiebreaker against Denver, but has a much tougher game ? at Indianapolis (10-5).

"We see it," Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey said of the standings. "But it doesn't distract us."

Miller's 1? sacks gave him 17? for the season, topping Elvis Dumervil's franchise record by ?.

"Individual accomplishments are great, but I think it just says the type of defense that we play here," Miller said.

Denver put this game away during an eight-minute stretch in the third quarter after Cleveland cut its deficit to 14-6.

Manning led a 91-yard touchdown drive, highlighted when he threw a dart that slammed off Decker's hands and dropped into Stokley's. Just another Broncos first down ? and another sign this was not Cleveland's day. Two plays later, Manning hit Decker for an 8-yard touchdown, and three plays after that, Miller knocked Weeden out of the game.

Denver reached 30 points for the 10th time this season, yet another benchmark of success for Manning, a quarterback who insists age and injury have turned him into someone much different than what he once was.

"The ramifications of the (injury) is part of it, and part of it is probably being 36, and part of it is probably playing with a new team," he said. "You can probably add them all together. I'm just trying to kind of be the best I can be in this role."

Notes: With his 53 yards, Richardson has 950, surpassing Jim Brown for the franchise rookie record. ... Denver's 10-game win streak matches the second longest in franchise history, in 1984, when John Elway was quarterback. ... Manning passed Elway and Jake Plummer for second most yards passing in a season for the Broncos. Manning needs 172 to break Jay Cutler's record.

"There is no way to really know yet how many people were killed. When I got there, I could see piles of bodies all over the ground. There were women and children," said Samer al-Hamawi, an activist in the town of?Halfaya, where the strike hit. "There are also dozens of wounded people"

Halfaya?was seized by rebels last week as part of a campaign to push into new territories in the 21-month-old revolt against President?Bashar al-Assad.

Another?activist said residents picking through the bodies were still determining which were wounded and which were dead.

Hamawi, who spoke via?Skype, uploaded a video of the scene, which showed dozens of dust-coated bodies lined up near a pile of rubble by a concrete building, its walls blackened.

The sounds of people screaming could be heard in the video, as some men rushed to the scene on motorcycles and other residents limped away from the area.

The authenticity of the video could not be immediately verified. The government restricts media access in?Syria.

Activists said more than a thousand people had been queuing at the bakery. Shortages of fuel and flour have made bread production erratic across the country, and people often wait for hours to buy bread.

New York-based?Human Rights Watch?condemned army air strikes on bakeries earlier this year, arguing that in some incidents the military was not using enough precision to target rebel sites and in other instances may have intentionally hit civilians.

"We hadn't received flour in around three days so everyone was going to the bakery today, and lots of them were women and children," Hamawi said. "I still don't know yet if my relatives are among the dead."

Ho Ho Holy Discount: Vatican tax-free store busy

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- Anyone left on your Christmas list just aching for a 65-inch Samsung 3D flat-screen television? Just your luck. The Vatican's duty-free department store has one on sale for ?2,899 ($3,840) ? a nifty savings over the ?3,799 ($5,032) it costs at Italy's main electronics chain Euronics.

Or how about some new luggage for the holidays? The Vatican shop stocks a variety of Samsonite Cordoba Duo carry-ons for ?123, a nice markdown from the ?135 on the Samsonite website. But if a last-minute shopping splurge is in order, the Vatican can also oblige: Take this leather-bound travelling trunk from Florence's "The Bridge" leatherworks, with its five drawers, plaid interior, six wooden hangars and shiny brass buckles.

At ?5,900, it comes with a matching leather golf club bag, just what every monsignor needs under his Christmas tree.

There's a little-known open secret in the Vatican gardens, a few paces behind St. Peter's Basilica and tucked inside the Vatican's old train station: a sprawling, three-story tax-free department store that rivals any airport duty free or military PX, stocking everything from Church's custom grade shoes (?483 a pair) to Baume et Mercier watches (ladies ?1,585, men's Capeland ?5,000).

There's a hitch, however. It's not open to the public, only to Vatican citizens, employees and their dependents, diplomats accredited to the Holy See and (unofficially) their lucky friends who, after stocking up on holiday must-haves, proceed to the checkout with their Vatican connection and the ID card that entitles them to shop there.

To be sure, Rome is no stranger to tax-free shopping. Embassies, nearby military bases and the U.N. food agencies all have commissaries for their employees, where imports of everything from American ice cream to French wine can be had minus the 21 percent sales tax included in list prices in Italy.

The Vatican has that and more, given that it's its own sovereign state ? the world's smallest ? operating in central Rome. At 44 hectares (110 acres), the Vatican city state is the physical home of the Holy See: the pope and governing structure and administration of the Catholic Church.

The Vatican Museums, home of Sistine Chapel, are the main profit-making enterprise of the Vatican city state, bringing in ?91.3 million in revenue last year alone. But other smaller entrepreneurial endeavors boost the Vatican's coffers as well, including the department store, the tax-free gas station, the stamp and coin collecting office, the Vatican pharmacy and its supermarket.

And in these days of austerity, their profits and bottom line are ever more important to the Vatican.

The Vatican is entitled to run such tax-free enterprises inside its walls based on the Lateran Treaty, the 1929 pact that regularized and regulates the Vatican's relations with Italy. But those regulations also limit the Vatican's customer base, lest all of Rome descend on the supermarket to stock up on Gordon's Gin (?8.50 a liter compared to the ?15 it can run in nearby liquor stores) or Montecristo No. 3 Cuban cigars (box of 25 ?84 ($110.95) compared to $164.95 on www.bestcigarprices.com).

About 4,700 people are employed by the Holy See and the Vatican city state; the Vatican's diplomatic corps ? the Holy See has relations with some 175 countries ? adds another chunk to the customer base.

Few people outside Rome know the department store exists ? there's no evidence of it on any Vatican website, no photos of its wares, no advertising outside the Vatican walls. Those who do know it exists seem to want to pretend it doesn't since the high-end luxury items on sale aren't necessarily in tune with either the sobriety or the salaries of the Vatican rank-and-file.

In fact, on a recent Thursday morning, nary a collar nor religious habit was in sight as ordinary lay folk milled around the spacious store during December's "extraordinary opening hours" ? extended to accommodate bargain-hunting Christmas shoppers who were rewarded with a wine tasting in the central atrium and piles of Brooks Brothers non-iron shirts and Burberry backpacks to choose from.

"More than the prices, it's the material," said Luciano, a bulky Roman, who refused to give his last name as he shopped for an overcoat with his wife and an obliging Vatican friend waiting at checkout. "This one I don't like ? I look like a priest," he muttered as he put the navy blue trench coat back on a hangar.

Cardinal Edmund Szoka, the American who sought to bring some order into the Vatican's finances as head of the Vatican city state, is credited with having made the department store what it is today, moving it into the Vatican's underused train station, a miniature version of Washington's Union station with a sweeping double staircase and glass-front window that frames the dome of St. Peter's a few meters (yards) away.

Szoka said he moved it from the basement of the Vatican government building to the train station for more space, since the station wasn't used anymore for passengers and provided the perfect, airy open space that a shop of its kind would require.

"Our principal motivation in changing the train station building into a department store was mainly for the convenience of our employees, as well as for those who could come into the Vatican and shop there," he said in an email from his home in Michigan. "Naturally, we expected a profit, but that was not the primary motivation."

Szoka retired in 2006, well before the global economic crisis hit. The current leadership of the "Governorato" as the city state administration is called, recently asked all department heads to come up with cost-saving or profit-making initiatives to help the Vatican get through the tough times.

"Any good administrator wants to save what can be saved," said Monsignor Giuseppe Sciacca, the governorato's No. 2. "It seems obvious, necessary."

The Philatelic and Numismatic Office, for example, recently started selling a special limited-edition stamp to help pay for the ?14 million restoration of the Bernini colonnade in St. Peter's Square after corporate sponsorship dried up amid the recession.

Vatican Radio announced in July it would be saving "hundreds of thousands of euros" in energy costs by stopping short -and -medium-wave broadcasts to Europe and the Americas, using other technologies instead.

Perhaps even more than the department store, the Vatican supermarket is a much-sought after perk for Vatican employees, and a boost to the Vatican's bottom line. And at Christmastime, it is as jammed as the department store, with lines snaking through the store and cars taking up valuable parking spaces inside Vatican City as shoppers pile their carts high with panettone, the traditional Italian Christmas cake which is the de rigueur gift for Italian holiday parties. Panettone can run ?25 a pop at Roman bakeries; in the Vatican supermarket, a high-end brand runs almost half that.

"The Nutella is just better here," said Maria Grazia Mancini, a Rome municipal worker who was doing a major pre-Christmas shop with her father, a Vatican employee. "The products here are for export ? the same brands but for export, so it's better quality."

While Sciacca is only too pleased to see the Vatican saving money where it can be saved and making it where it can be made, he was adamant that there are no plans to expand the customer base of the Vatican's little-known discount stores. Accords with Italy don't allow it.

"We shouldn't. And we can't," he said.

He spoke on the sidelines of the presentation of the Vatican's 2012 nativity scene, being unveiled Monday night and donated for the first time. The Vatican happily accepted the donated creche from the Italian region of Basilicata after its ?550,000 Christmas setup in 2009 was exposed earlier this year during the scandal over leaked Vatican documents.

Mood muted during last holiday shopping weekend

ATLANTA (AP) ? Last-minute shoppers crowded into malls and stores during the last weekend before Christmas, but many didn't seem to be in the spirit of spending.

This holiday season, Americans have a lot on their minds: the Superstorm Sandy cleanup in November in the Northeast, the recent Newtown, Conn., school shooting and the fast approaching "fiscal cliff" deadline. They have resulted in a muted approach to holiday shopping ? bad news for retailers, which can make up to 40 percent of annual sales during November and December and are counting on the last weekend before Christmas for last-minute sales.

To entice shoppers, retailers large and small have expanded hours and stepped up promotions. Some are staying open around the clock, and others are adding additional price cuts to already discounted merchandise.

Investing in Facebook Stock? Keep an Eye on Dec. 12 ? Money ...

The Good News for Facebook Stock Investors

Scores of major mutual funds that allocate funds primarily or solely to a specific index or sector and/or exchange-traded funds (as detailed in their prospectus), are frequent and prominent investors in the Nasdaq 100.

So, those funds - fans of Facebook stock or not - must add the security to their stash of holdings.

As a result, trading in Facebook stock will see a pop and its price may also be goosed.

More than $49.4 billion was invested in Nasdaq 100 funds or related products last year, according to the totally electronic exchange, USA Today reported.

Rebalancing of the index occurs yearly as the exchange tosses out companies whose value has dipped and no longer warrants a position in the index, replacing the old with more valuable companies.

Sometimes, as in Facebook's case, the Nasdaq opens the door early due to an exit of a member. In this case it's the exodus of Infosys (Nasdaq ADR: INFY), which is ditching the Nasdaq for the rival NYSE.

But, investors be warned - this phenomenon could very well be short lived and temporary. After all-the Nasdaq 100 invite is a one-time deal.

Facebook Stock Not Out of the Woods

Despite the recent spate of better news for Facebook, which has been struggling to gain traction and save face after its fabled IPO was a flop, the stock is not out the woods by any means.

Rising from a low of around $17.75 in September, and currently trading at $27.48, shares remain well below their debut price of $38 or peak of $43 reached on first day of trading. Plus, Facebook's present valuation of $60 billion is nearly half the $100 billion valuation it carried when it became a public company.

Weighing on the stock has been the torrent of shares that have flooded the market over the last few months due to the expiration of lockups, which has allowed many insiders to cash in. And many have done just that.

Another concern is how Facebook is monetizing its massive 1 billion user base.

As more and more members are accessing the site exclusively via mobile devices, an arena where Facebook fails to make much revenue, the social network giant, late to the game, continues to play catch-up.

Facebook has been adding new features, is making headway in mobile, and by all appearances is enjoying an upward trend.

But that's the thing with trends. They're fleeting.

Waving a bright red flag is Facebook stock's short position, which is growing in spite of the better news, recent upgrades and winding down of the lockup expirations.

According to data by the Nasdaq National Market, on Nov. 15 Facebook's short position rose to more than 95 million shares from 87 million, an increase of more than 7 million from Oct. 31, a staggering number of shorted shares.

So plenty of market participants remain wary, if not downright bearish, on Facebook stock - but a short-term bump looks to be on the way.

Tunisian troops fire tear gas at protesters

SILIANA, Tunisia (Reuters) - Tunisian security forces fired tear gas and live rounds into the air on Saturday to try to disperse thousands of protesters in a town that has seen days of protests over economic problems in the North African state.

National guard forces belonging to the Interior Ministry fired tear gas and rounds from inside armored personnel carriers in the town of Siliana, southwest of Tunis on the edge of the Sahara desert.

"Get out, get out!", "With our blood and soul we sacrifice ourselves for you, Siliana" and "Siliana will be the graveyard of the Ennahda party" the protesters, who numbered about 3,000, chanted while throwing stones at security forces.

Police chased protesters down streets in an apparent effort to arrest them.

The Islamist Ennahda party that won Tunisia's first post-Arab Spring election last year is struggling to revive the economy due to lower trade with the crisis-hit euro zone.

Disputes also continue between secularists and hardline Salafi Islamists over the future direction of the country.

Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki asked the Islamist Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali in an address on state television on Friday to appoint a new cabinet in response to the protests.

On Saturday, Jebali seemed poised to remove the controversial Siliana governor to ease tensions. A statement on state news agency TAP said a deputy had been put in charge of the governorate's affairs pending a "final decision".

The protests are the fiercest since Salafis attacked the U.S. embassy in Tunis in September over an anti-Islam film made in California. Four people were killed in that violence.

CONTROVERSIAL TACTICS

Navi Pillay, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said on Friday authorities must stop using firearms against demonstrators, in some of her harshest criticisms of the government elected after veteran ruler Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali fled in January last year during mass protests.

The tactics used to put down the protests have stirred anger among secular politicians in Tunisia, who say the new government is advocating the kind of harsh policing employed by Ben Ali.

At least 252 people have been wounded by the use of birdshot, according to state news agency TAP. Medical sources say 17 people have been blinded. A Reuters witness did not see police using birdshot on Saturday.

"Authorities must respect the right to peaceful assembly and ensure that the police adhere to international standards on use of force and firearms," Amnesty International said in a statement on Friday.

The government has formed an independent commission to investigate the latest unrest, TAP said. It also reported clashes in the town of Barqo near Siliana on Saturday, saying youths attacked three police vehicles.

It was in the provincial town of Sidi Bouzid, that a street seller set himself alight in 2010 in despair at the confiscation of his fruit cart, blowing the lid off simmering anger about poverty, joblessness, corruption and repression, triggering the Arab Spring uprisings.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Notre Dame ends the regular season as the No. 1 team in The Associated Press college football for the first time since 1988, the last championship season for the Fighting Irish.

The Irish (12-0) completed their regular season last week and will play No. 2 Alabama in the BCS championship game in Miami on Jan. 7.
